Section Final vs. Wayzata
3rd Consecutive Year
Wayzata (eventual
2002 State Champions )
= 1 , Osseo -0
Section Final @ Wayzata (3rd consecutive
year!) - Oct 15th
Clear skies, light wind and 40 degrees,
as Osseo (17-2-0) and Wayzata (14-2-2) squared off again for the section
title. Last year the Wayzata Trojans went to State for their 3rd
consecutive year after a 1-0 victory over Osseo. This year, with a
returning core group of veteran Seniors, the Orioles had hopes to make this
their year for State. The Orioles led off the game with several strong
advances on the Wayzata goal, but no score. At the end of the first half
the score was still tied 0-0, reflecting a close match and steady even play by
both teams. The second half brought renewed effort by both teams with the
Trojans repeatedly pressuring the Osseo goal and Oriole goalkeeper Lindsey
LaVoie making several stops and performing very admirably. On several occasions the sideline
ref signaled off sides or no foul and the center ref ignored the flag
or call and even ruled the opposite awarding a corner kick or free kick for
the Wayzata team. Following such an occasion, with 15:22 left in the game (64th minute) the Trojans slipped in a well
placed and untouched shot crossing to the far right side of the net for the first goal
of the game.
The Orioles returned with another series of shots including a
dazzling display of footwork and speed as Kat Krambeer threaded her way past Trojan defenders and placed a hard shot into the Trojan net to tie the game with
about ten minutes remaining. Moments later, in a highly controversial
call, the ref called back the tying goal, ruling Krambeer offsides. The
crowd was astounded, as she came from and traveled from behind the ball! As play continued Krambeer was fouled
(inside the box, according to those
closest to the play) and awarded a free kick
just outside the box. Krambeer's free kick was right on goal just below
the crossbar when the Trojan goalie grazed the ball just enough to deflect it
into the crossbar. As the Orioles played on in the final few minutes another very well placed
arcing shot
by Krambeer was deflected from the goal in a fine effort by
the Trojan goalie.

When Krambeer was again taken down in the Trojan box and no penalty called, and
a Trojan handball in the same box was also not called, the questions were
building. Moments later a clear corner kick for the Orioles was given a
shoulder shrug by the line ref and ruled a goal kick for the Trojans, again drawing the crowds displeasure and depriving the Orioles once
again. This game was an outstanding display of
soccer by both the Osseo and Wayzata teams. Sadly, in the opinion of many
who watched the game, the score was inordinately influenced by the ref, rather
than determined by the girls performance. Players, coaches and fans at
this level of competition deserve better for all their years of commitment.

Section 2AA Semi Final - Maple Grove @ Osseo - Oct. 12
With broken skies, a stiff 20-25 mph NW
wind and 49 degrees, district rivals (many of the girls being friends and
summer teammates) went head to head for an intense
game of tough soccer to determine who would advance to the finals and have a
shot at the state tournament. As the game warmed up in the chilly wind the
Crimson were awarded a foul and scored on the resultant PK @ 25:44. As
time would later prove, this was a crucial event. The first half ended at
1-0.
The Orioles came on strong in the second half pressuring the Crimson goal with repeated shots
but failing to capture the net. The
Orioles dominated the half with nearly all time played on the third of the field
in front of the Crimson net. Plagued by the official's foul calls
& repeated free kicks, but now aided by the wind, the Orioles perseverance paid off
as Kat Krambeer placed a superb free kick into the MG goal @ 1:23, tying the
game at 1-1.
In the ensuing two 10 minute overtimes both teams worked hard as play again
dominated near the front of the MG goal. Sudden death loomed as the
Orioles fought to overcome wind, foul calls and near miss after near miss.
Following 20 minutes of OT the game entered the shoot out phase with 5 shots for
each side. Lindsey LaVoie, the Oriole GK, made a huge save on the first
shot and nearly wrestled in a second save as the shoot out progressed.
Goals were added by Kat Krambeer, Alissa Ochs, Kayla Phillips, Tegan Moehn and
the game was still undecided until the very last goal by Miranda Pogulis.
Final score 2-1 Osseo! Our thanks to the players of both teams for your
outstanding efforts and soccer performance!

Anoka @ Osseo - Oct. 1 (Senior

Go Katie M!
A partly cloudy evening of 60 degrees,
calm winds and a sprinkle or two. Osseo was up for this game, despite the
absence of starting goalie Lindsay Lavoie (injured) and Sr Captain Katie
Meinhardt, who has been out all season (but started this game for a few minutes). The Orioles had a good first half
spending lots of activity on the Tornado's side. Kat Krambeer scored the
first goal of the game @ 35:34 in the first half with Angela Mooney repeatedly
providing outstanding midfield support. Following halftime festivities,
Vanessa Saunders added goal number two @ 38:36, assisted by Alissa Ochs.

@ 37:24, assisted by Saunders. The Orioles 4th goal came at 27:43 by
Alissa Ochs, assisted by both Sykora & Krambeer. Steph Clover
performed admirably as GK, making some key saves, along with the defensive team
of Beth Thomas, Tegan Moen and Heather Stueven

@ Bloomington Jefferson - Sept
28 (non-conference)
T'was a dreary overcast & misty
afternoon on a small non-regulation (goose feathered) practice field in
Bloomington. The Orioles seemed to perform in sync with the dreary day,
and below their usual caliber. The Jaguars seemed comfortable on the
smaller field and displayed determined and quality soccer as the #8 ranked
Orioles yielded to the # 10 ranked Jaguars after holding the score at 0-0
through the first half and into the second. The Jaguar's 1st goal came
approx midway in the 2nd half, with two more added in the last 5 minutes of
play, as the Orioles realigned for a more offensive focus. Some great
saves were displayed by Oriole goalkeeper Lavoie, as well as the Jefferson
GK. Osseo still holds a 6-0 Conference record with an 11-2 overall season
record, having lost to #1 ranked Mntka 0-1. The Orioles meet Anoka and Andover next week to finish up this years
conference play.

@ Champlin Park - Sept. 26
A cool 49 degrees, no wind and ground fog.
Both the Orioles and the Rebels played tough games working the ball on both ends
of the field. Some nice shots on goal by Mooney and Ochs still left the
score 0-0 at the half. The Orioles stepped up their play a notch in the
second half increasing shots on goal and scoring the games first and only goal by
Krambeer (19th goal this year). The Oriole defense (Thomas, Moen and Stueven) held strong for
their fifth conference shutout. No mosquito's were noted on this chilly
evening where moments of knee deep ground fog teamed with the visible breath of the
players, to add an almost eerie ambience. Osseo gained another victory retaining
their claim to the top of their conference @ 6-0

Coon Rapids @ Osseo - Sept. 24
The game began in late afternoon sunshine with a brisk SE breeze and a definite
touch of cool 59 degree fall air. Both teams played steady and determined
soccer with each team missing a number of close shots and each missing a PK.
As time wore on the Orioles continued to dominate spending substantial time near
the Cardinal goal bouncing several near goals of the post and bar before
Krambeer scored the only goal of the game (assist by Phillips) near the 15 minute mark
of the second
half. Later, with only 13:24 remaining a huge bolt of lightening thundered above
the field and people scattered as the refs stopped play. As the official
weather time-out lapsed the storm continued with abundant lightening, heavy rain and
hail, bringing the game to an end.
The Orioles
continue leading the conference 5-0 with a 10-1 record overall, having beaten
Coon Rapids in earlier season non-conf play 3-1.
The Orioles only loss is to former State
Champs and #1 rated Minnetonka 0-1.

@ Armstrong Sept. 21st (non-conference)

grass.
The Orioles took the lead early on a goal by Kat Krambeer @ 5:04, with Krambeer

goalie was challenged repeatedly as the Orioles passed, dribbled and fired shot
after shot with Krambeer eventually adding two more goals @17:42 and 37:50 in the second half,
one being on an exceptional header which crossed the length of the net on its
way into the far corner. Assists go to Saunders (3) and Phillips (1).
Osseo takes the 4-0 victory adding another
shut-out to their record and displaying some very fine soccer!.

Orioles. Both teams contributed to a tough and challenging game and the
score continued at 0-0 through the first half and well into the second half of
the game. Despite several saves by Oriole GK LaVoie the Skippers
scored the only goal of the game @ 15:57 in the second half. A quick header off a
